Education
Education or lack of it can be an important protective or risk factor for mental, emotional, and behavioral health. Data related to highest educational attainment is found both in the County Profiles Basic Demographic section and also in the Community Risk Factor’s section as Education less than high school diploma.
In the Basic Demographics table you will find the percentages of persons aged 25 and older with highest Educational Attainment of: less than a 9th grade education, less than high school graduation, high school diploma, etc. There you will find data for education beyond high school. Attainment of some level of education beyond high school graduation is considered a protective factor by SAMHSA. This data and a ranking of the counties for it (RANK for % of Pop with Highest Ed Attain Post HS = Some College or more) is included in Basic Demographics.
In the Community Risk Factors, Extreme Social and Economic Deprivation section, you will find repeated the data for these risk factor variables, including Education less than high school diploma.
In the County Health Ranking section you will find Education included as a component used to calculated Socioeconomic Factors, which are weighted heavily in the overall health factor score for each county. See County Health Rankings, Socioeconomic Factors, where counties are ranks for education based on two variables: high school graduation rate and some college.
