Welcome to Using Motivational Interviewing!

This one-hour self-paced course is a follow-up training to the Introduction to Motivational Interviewing module. This course is geared toward healthcare, behavioral healthcare, addictions treatment, and allied healthcare professionals who already have an understanding of motivational interviewing (MI). It focuses on strengthening early knowledge through practice. This course also encourages a deeper understanding of MI by focusing on higher-level skills.

In this course, participants will meet the following applied objectives:

    • Practice the application of core skills and concepts within the context of each of the four Motivational Interviewing processes (Engage, Focus, Evoke, Plan).
    • Recognize change talk and sustain talk.
    • Observe and manage discord.
    • Understand resources for developing MI competence.

This course is intended to be a follow-up to the Introduction to Motivational Interviewing module. These modules provide a solid introduction to the fundamentals of MI. However, additional practice and in-person training with coaching and feedback are recommended for further development of motivational interviewing competency.

This course is based on Motivational Interviewing: Helping People Change
(3rd ed.)
, (Miller & Rollnick, 2013).
