One of the most common errors that organizations make when implementing SBIRT is to start with training. Staff may learn how to offer the screening tool or how to deliver a brief intervention, but then months go by before the skills are applied.

Instead, successful implementation places training just before ”go live,” when SBIRT is offered to consumers. Doing so keeps the content and practice fresh in team members’ minds and allows for all staff to maintain engagement when initiating the process with patients.

Staff training is dependent upon the process flow. Some organizations train all staff members in every aspect of SBIRT. Other organizations train individuals based on their role in the process flow. Training is also frequently required for billing, though each state has its own requirements or recommendations.
