About SBIRT

Screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT) is a comprehensive, integrated, public health approach to the delivery of early intervention and treatment services. It is used for persons who are at moderate or high risk for psychosocial or health care problems related to their substance use.

Substance use is an umbrella term that refers to multiple classes of substances, including but not limited to:

  • Tobacco
  • Alcohol
  • Caffeine
  • Illegal drugs
  • Misuse of legal drugs
SBIRT employs principles of Motivational Interviewing (MI) for identifying harmful substance use.
