Ecstasy (MDMA)
Ecstasy (MDMA) is a mood-enhancing drug that produces a strong sense of empathy and euphoria. Popular in the âraveâ and club scene, MDMA has properties of both stimulants and hallucinogens. Ecstasy tablets usually are pastel colored and imprinted with designs or commercials logos. Ecstasy can immediately cause problems with muscular coordination, dehydration, hypertension, hyperventilation, and insomnia. It can also cause an increase in blood pressure and heart rate. An overdose can lead to kidney failure, cardiac arrest, coma, and death. Surveys show that Ecstasy use among 12th graders has declined from 9.5% in 2002 to 5.9% in 2005. Ecstasy is considered a Schedule I drug, meaning that it is not accepted for any therapeutic use.
