January is National Mentor Month

On January 4, 2010 President Barack Obama signed the National Mentor Month (NMM) proclamation.  The purpose of this proclamation is to promote mentoring programs and activities across the nation.  NMM was created by the Harvard School of Public Health and has been in existence for nine years.  Some of the goals of NMM include; raising awareness of mentoring in its various forms, recruiting mentors, and promoting mentoring as well as encouraging organizations to become involved.

What exactly do mentors do?  Mentors can provide a lasting and positive influence in the life of a child by participating in various activities such as helping with homework, playing sports, spending time together talking and by listening, which is perhaps the most  important way a mentor can make a big difference.

According to the NMM website (http://www.nationalmentoringmonth.org) there are 10 things you can do in January to promote mentoring:

  1. Become a mentor in your community.
  2. Learn more about mentoring.
  3. Partner with a mentoring organization.
  4. Tell 5 friends about National Mentoring Month.
  5. Think about the mentors in your life and post a tribute to them online.
  6. Watch videos of celebrities such as Quincy Jones, Sting, Cal Ripken, Jr., talk about the mentors in their lives.
  7. Read the latest research and find resources on mentoring.
  8. Go to YouTube on Thank Your Mentor Day™ (January 21st) and make the National Mentoring  Month videos the most popular of the day!
  9. Serve your community on MLK Day of Service by deciding to become a mentor.
  10. Make a donation to a mentoring organization in your community.
