Mid-America Regional Public Health Leadership Institute (MARPHLI)

This year the IPRC has a team participating in the 16th annual Mid – America Public Health Leadership Institute (MARPHLI). The theme for this year is "Meta Leadership and Preparedness: Collaboration in a Global Health Environment." The IPRC staff team consists of Mary Lay, Jennifer Kelley, Desiree Reynolds, Aaron Jones, and Katie Wood.

Over the course of the year long institute, each team must complete a public health case study demonstrating a core function of public health. The IPRC group looked at "Smoke-free workplace policies in casinos". Using a fictional Indiana casino the group went through the steps of how this casino could become a smoke-free workplace.

MARPHLI

According to their website, MARPHLI is an academic-based, year-long leadership training experience for public health practitioners. The program is designed to promote organizational, professional and personal leadership skill development. These skills are learned by attending lectures, conferences, and group meetings, completing a group project, and meeting with a personal mentor for the program. The project began at the Public Health Training and Practice Group at the University of Illinois at Chicago, School of Public Health. The Institute, founded on the theory that leadership can be taught and learned, has been in existence since 1991. The institute was the UIC's SPH's response to the Institute of Medicine's landmark study, "The Future of Public Health," which recommended improving leadership skills as a foundation for addressing public health issues.

MARPHLI, backed by the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, the Illinois Department of Public Health, and the Wisconsin Division of Health, is a program for state and local public health department leaders, board of health members, community leaders and legislators serving all levels of the public health system.
