IPRC Open House Recap on 11/15/2007
The open house at the Indiana Prevention Resource Center (IPRC) on November 15th was a success.Many visitors attended the event and showed their support for the IPRC.
Among the attending were Dave Bozell, Bureau Chief for Mental Health Promotion and Addiction Prevention, Division of Mental Health and Addiction; Dean Goodman, Dean of the School of Health Physical Education and Recreation; Dr. Torabi, Chancellorâs Professor of Applied Health Science; Dee Owens, Director of Alcohol and Drug Information Center; Joyce Arthur, Fiscal Officer of Applied Health Science and Assistant to the Chairperson, Department of Applied Health Science; and many more applied health science professionals, prevention specialists and their families.
The visitors participated in activities including Swat the Answer, used Fatal Vision Goggles and visited with IPRC employees and Joe Chemo. The Indiana Prevention Resource Center would like to thank everyone who was involved in making the open house a successful event.

The Indiana Prevention Resource Center has a new home in downtown Bloomington, 501 N. Morton, Suite 110 in the Indiana University Research Park. This move came as a result of the destruction of the Creative Arts Building to make room for IU's new super computer system, named "Big Red".
In looking for a new location, the IU Research Park was selected as the perfect location for bringing visibility to the center and collaboration with other life science initiatives located within the building. Other HPER initiatives include: the National Center on Accessibility, the Eppley Institute for Parks and Public Lands; the President's Challenge Physical Activity and Fitness Awards Program; and the Updyke Center on Physical Activity. The IU Research Park is located in downtown Bloomington, just west of the Courthouse and a few blocks from IU's main campus.
The IU Research Park is housed in the Showers complex formerly the Showers Brothers Furniture Factory. This historic building, built in 1910, produced 60% of the country's furniture by 1920. The Showers Brothers also invented and named the process of lamination. When the US census was conducted in 1910, they pinpointed the exact location where there were an equal number of people living north, east, south, and west. That location was on the doorstep of the showers building; capitalizing on this free publicity they declared themselves the Center of the Universe. The furniture factory closed in the 1950's and sat vacant until a renovation project began in 1994.

We can expand our staff, our resources, and our capabilities to assist communities across the state." - Executive Director Ruth Gassman.
