Give and Take Feedback

As a member of the healthcare team, you are often expected to offer your professional advice. The way you share this advice can impact the rest of the conversation. It is important to be specific. Use information from their screening responses, and offer clear feedback.

Show empathy by asking your patient's/client's reaction to what you've stated. Explore values as to where substance use fits into their life.

For example:

"I know that you are really concerned about your blood pressure. Based on your answers to the questionnaire, I believe that you are drinking more than is medically safe for your body. This may be one reason why your blood pressure is staying high. What do you think?"

"I know you indicated  you sometimes use cocaine with friends. I'm concerned that even using occasionally could be affecting your mood and your sleep. Can we talk more about the pros and cons of cocaine for you?"
